Getting to know FrameCycler

Looking to the Future

Why do you want to go over to Linux?

Jami: We find that Linux brings many advantages to our work. File transfers over the network go much faster and it gives us a lot of flexibility. We do a lot of scripting to automate processes, such as file conversions and storage management.

Claude: We also find that upgrading our software is much easier with Linux. Working in a mixed environment can create problems, but having products such as FrameCycler which can run on both platforms is a big help.

What made you decide to join the IRIDAS beta program?

Jami: We liked their software and we wanted to have some influence on the direction of product development. For example, we pushed for the capability of resizing screen resolution in real time which FrameCycler can now do. We like that feature!

Claude: In general, we appreciate the way IRIDAS works so closely with artists using their products. That’s another reason we are on the Beta team.

Jami: We arrived on the team just in time! IRIDAS was starting to beta test the Linux version of FrameCycler (FrameCycler MP). That was perfect for us and I’d like to believe that our experiences in transitioning to Linux—and running Windows and Linux machines together—were helpful for them.

Today, IRIDAS products have become core elements in Meteor Studio’s infrastructure. They use the scripting capabilities of IRIDAS SequencePublisher to automate the assembly of layers in Daylight (which they do overnight—if you follow me!). When Meteor’s artists come back in the morning, the new sequences are ready for review at their FrameCycler Digital Daily System workstation. The Cinespace plug-in (supported by FrameCycler) ensures color accuracy.

Claude Precourt is Visual Effects Supervisor at Meteor.

Claude combines an artist’s eye (thanks to his fine arts training and experience) with an in-depth understanding of VFX technologies. He thrives on finding creative solutions which are aesthetically pleasing and technically sound. Before joining Meteor he did work on Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within Since and has been involved in every major project at Meteor since he came onboard in August 2001.
