Rob, Mike, and the Story of Pendulum
Mike McCormick and Rob Taylor have a long history of collaboration and have been a team
since 1992. They first met in high-school, and went on to attend Georgia
Tech together where they studied engineering and industrial design. Both
had arts backgrounds and both were dissatisfied with the purely
technical side of computers. While at college they traveled to Chicago
for a SIGGraph sponsored event and discovered a whole new world in
which computer technology was being put to work. That encounter changed
their lives and set the course for their careers.
The duo proceeded to form Taylor/McCormick in Atlanta, which they
eventually sold to Crawford Communications. They went on to partner with the motion-capture R&D firm
BioMechanics to co-found Giant Studios (Giant subsequently licensed its
technology to WETA for use in the Lord of the Rings films). It
was at
Giant that they really began to use “technology to tell stories.” They
went on to form Pendulum Studios in San Diego, CA with the goal of using
innovative animation to tell entertaining and enduring stories.
Extensive consulting and freelance work around the world has taught
them a lot about how to best organize production pipelines. That
experience has been put to work at Pendulum.
Today Mike and Rob continue to thrive within their long-lasting
partnership, and are actively driving the development of Pendulum and
its growing team of talented artists. Rob focuses much of his day-to-day
efforts on the business and production management aspects (and refuses
to give up his compositing role), while Mike runs the 3D production side
of the studio, with much of his attention focussed on technical solutions
and character animation.
They co-direct all creative efforts of the studio, and try to have as
much fun as possible with their amazing team. The talented artists at
Pendulum make this easy, and make the studio an exciting place to be. |
