IRIDAS: How did you get into color?
Stephane: We knew we wanted to offer color along with our
other post services. We started doing our own programming with the idea
of using Fusion for color grading and controlling it through a JL Cooper
panel.
But then at NAB 2004, we discovered IRIDAS. When we first saw a demo of
SpeedGrade we were really impressed. We decided to bring it into our
color services - which we call "In Color."
IRIDAS: You may be the first facility to offer an end-to-end color
pipeline. How did that happen?
Stephane: Well, one artist who has been a big part of our
success, is Jérôme Sabourin. He is one of the leading DPs in Quebec, and
probably the leader here in digital acquisition technologies. But what
makes him unique, is that he is also a colorist. It was Jérôme, working
with our R&D team, who made SpeedGrade into an "end-to-end" color
pipeline for us.
IRIDAS: How did he do that?
Stephane: Jérôme uses SpeedGrade on his laptop. When he is
shooting, he will do test shots and quick grading for reviews with the
director. This means that once he gets back here on SpeedGrade DI to do
the color timing, he already has a clear idea of what needs to be done.
IRIDAS: Has your approach made you more efficient?
Stephane: We do two of the three top-rated television dramas
here in Quebec so we need to be efficient. We have about 20 hours to
finish the grading for each hour of finished material. Both programs are
visually demanding and fairly complex in terms of their look and feel.
The pipeline has to be very efficient. SpeedGrade gives us that. |

The In Color services have
been a big part of the new facility's success. In Extenso is currently
adding a second color suite with SpeedGrade DI at its heart.
